A wonderful and inspirational post, Matt!

In my school (and college) days, I was an extreme morning person. Not 3:00 AM, of course! My morning started at around 4:30 AM, when I used to take extra classes (called tuition classes back in India). I never felt tired or sleepy during the day. But I made myself sleep before 10:30 PM.

I have come long way, being out of college for more than 11 years, married and have a daughter who is passing her terrible three. My wife is a late-night owl, and so I also began to follow her steps (bad me!).
Result is I am neither a late night owl nor a morning person. I am a 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM lazy bum!!

But now, I think it is time to get that old school going me out!

I dont know how I stumbled across this post, but I think its all fate, at this new year coming close, I think I can make it up. And many many thanks for this inspiratonal post!

Thanks,
Rajeev

[...] Lack of time is a very common excuse but rarely valid. Most of us don’t really use all of our day effectively, so by trimming down on the time spent lying around bored and numb, it’s very possible to squeeze in an extra couple hours a day. If working all day wears you out, try waking up earlier. It’s all about time management, and a book like the excellent Getting Things Done is a great starting point to learn how easy it is to become much more effective at making things happen.
I really like the bit about coming home and crashing because you're used to crashing in that environment. That was exactly what has been happening to me over the past few weeks. I can't be in my room and expect to get any work done. It's probably something Pavlovian.

I remedied this by buying a laptop. It's really really helped my writing out a lot. I can get away from all my usual distractions to really get things done. I don't even have to move very far. Just moving to a different room in the house ups my productivity quite a bit.

Another interesting bit is the question of reason why your day succeeded. I think it was really because you wanted this experiment to succeed. Though, it was probably easier to will yourself to work first thing in the morning than after you get home from doing your normal daily routine. I love working in the morning, and I tend to get up early anyway. As long as I leave my dorm room early, I can be really productive. If I stay there, I'll do nothing for hours on end.
