Matt,

I like how you pointed out that having something to look foward to doing was one way to get up early in the morning. For me, that is what exactly gets me up early in the morning. I don't think people need "tactics" to wake up early. They have to find something passionate about first and that will take care of any cobwebs in the morning.

I also like how you suggest doing something everyday, little by little to find what you like to do. Those things really add up and compound.

I think a lot of the fear that is associated with "doing your own thing" comes from an ignorance of the process. Doing what you want to do is really not that risky, as long as you approach it correctly.

Me, for instance, I still work at my boring day job being a DBA for a company that I don't particularly like. However, for the past 6 months I've been laying the groundwork to start working for myself, while still being able to keep my house and my standard of living. 6 whole months- and I've got at least another 6 months to go before I can finish the jump. It's a difficult process- not one you can make on an impulse next Monday.
